For people that consider themselves "move-monkeys", the dinner has been
served. There are many sleights in this book, including some really odd ones
such as a bottom deal done at the fingertips and a "Tilt" move executed from
the front.
My favorite item in this book has the most awesome title ever; "Two-Card
Fan Lift Switch, Reversal, Palm". It's exactly that: a two card, fan lift
switch, a reversal and a palm. It sounds nuts, because it is nuts.
There is also a great amount of routines utilizing the sleights taught in
the book. Amongst variations of classic plots, you will find several original
to Mr. Krenzel. For example, one interesting routine in the book is a
Collectors routine done backwards: three selections vanish from in between the
aces, instead of the other way around!
Ever heard of "The Mechanical Reverse"? This book contains Krenzel's
original writeup for the move (although for the history buffs, there is some
dispute over the fact that Ron Wohl published it before Krenzel). It's a great
covered half pass that should be in every card magician's arsenal.
Ken Krenzel's description of the Classic Pass has been regarded as one of
the best, and it really is thorough. Several other shifts original to Ken
Krenzel are also discussed in the book.
As you can probably tell, this book isn't for people with a mild interest
in card magic. This is for the fanatics who get turned on by Two-Card Fan Lift
Switch, Reversal, Palms and other such technical card magic. I love the book
and if that kind of move excites you, you're going to love it too!

PROLOGO
Ilusionista y lector amigo, seré breve.
Han
transcurrido casi 30 años de la aparición de «Cartomagia», que, junto con
Fábregas, escribimos; y algo más de un año de la publicación de la «La Magia
de Bernat». Este último apareció porque no me atreví, entonces, a
enfrentarme con este titulado «Manipulaciones», que gracias a mi amigo Marré,
tengo la satisfacción de ver impreso.
No ha
sido tarea fácil, pese a tratar solamente de una parte de lo mucho que
abarca el tema manipulación, palabra que, lo mismo principiantes que grandes
ilusionistas, deben pronunciar con respeto y admiración: ella representa lo
clásico y fundamental, tanto de la magia actual como la de todos los tiempos.
Estos dos
últimos libros, si los comparamos, salvando todas las distancias, con el
mundo de la música, «La magia de Bernat» encajaría con una partitura ligera,
en cambio «Manipulaciones» se acercaría a la sinfónico.
Daba
cierto respeto enfrentarse con este libro, que a mis años representaba un
serio reto; nunca he olvidado mis propias limitaciones y, a pesar de haber
tenido siempre presente el refrán: «De lo más alto a lo más ridículo, sólo
hay un paso», a lo largo de la vida, demasiadas veces lo he dado. Quiera
Dios que este libro no represente uno más.
Las
manipulaciones que intento describir, son solamente las que utilizaba,
conozco y con las que, muchas de ellas, creo tengo algo que ver. El libro se
ordena en tres partes: la tercera trata de los abanicos cambiantes, con
cartas y barajas de colores; la segunda se llama «Divertimientos» que, el
realizarlos, tanto puede distraer al público como al que los ejecuta, y la
primera parte que va dedicada a la ingrata, dura y difícil, a la vez que
maravillosa técnica, y a los efectos que con la ayuda del llamado «Back and
Front» pueden lograrse.
Describir
los movimientos, detallar y desarrollar su mecánica, es árido, pesado y
aburrido y sucede que, al hacerlo, se recuerdan anécdotas y vivencias de
antaño, buenas y malas, que se mezclan con el tema de que se trata.
Se
empieza, entre técnica y técnica, como distracción, narrando alguna y luego
se sigue narrando, y uno se da cuenta que, sin querer, casi ha escrito otro
libro.
Esto me
ha acaecido y ha dado como resultado que el texto y su distribución sean
algo originales. A lo largo de todo el libro se siguen dos descripciones
paralelas, distintas y sin mezclarse; por un lado va la mecánica escueta,
lisa, y por el otro las divagaciones y narraciones -todas ciertas- más o
menos interesantes.
El lector,
haciendo uso de su soberana libertad, puede optar por alguna de estas
variantes: Mirar sólo las ilustraciones (que es lo que yo haría),
practicarlas siguiendo el texto, o, enterarse de todo: dibujos, técnica y
narraciones.
También
puede optar por ninguna de las tres y cerrar el libro.
